-We Grow Flowers-

Its a lot of work.. But I love every moment I get to be out in the garden, arranging your special flower bouquet.

Creating art with a canvas of flowers

– Mirrer

After growing every flower from seed, fighting pests and generally caring for each plant on a daily basis for months. Mirrer the owner of Shalom Specialty Flowers arranges our bouquets.

The process might seem simple, but flower arranging takes practice and knowing what flowers are meant for “fillers”, what flowers are meant for “focals” all of the “airy” and “spike flowers” are different down to the varieties. And knowing the math matical balances to understand what makes a good looking flower bouquet have a balanced composition takes time, you can call flower arranging a “math matical art piece”.

A really cool thing about Shalom Specialty Flowers is that because we grow our own flowers, I don’t have to mark each stem up x3 to cover shipping costs. Making $75 bouquets more reasonably priced, think $30. But I do have to make sure that I am covering my time of labor spent growing and arranging each bouquet so I cannot afford free flowers all of the time.

-Our Ethics-

At Shalom Specialty Flowers we believe that flowers should be sourced locally, wherever you may be in the world. That Includes Alaska. In a place that gets -60 (or more) in the winter, growing seasonal cut flowers is not something you think of first as a way to farm. We, also want to make sure we are preserving our land for years to come, not just sucking out all of its nutrients. We do this by cover cropping, tilling once and not again, mulching lots and using animal compost to enrich our soil. We do not use pesticides, lots of plastics (we need some for low tunnel green houses) and avoid using hybrid flower breeds so that we can save the seeds and the seed may be true to its parent.

We grow flowers here in one of the harshest environments in the world so that you can feel good about where you get your flowers from.

Starting Cut Flowers in August – Alaska

Last night the weather changed dramatically, I felt the chilly air after the sun had been out all day. The chill seeped into my house and surrounded me in the morning. Its dreary. Its fall in Alaska. Summers here in Alaska are short lived, flowers are fleeting and the birds make a quick U-Turn. It…
